Swimrun arrived in the T\u00e2mega River region in 2020, led by S\u00e9rgio Moreira. The athlete stated that his goal was to showcase the \u201cbeauty and challenge of this discipline\u201d, which combines swimming and running through \u201cstunning natural landscapes\u201d. The countdown to the 2024 edition has already begun. <\/strong><\/p>\n

O Swimrun j\u00e1 tinha sido implementado em Portugal, por Bruno Safara, o mesmo que impulsionou S\u00e9rgio Moreira \u2013 um grande entusiasta pelo desporto, desde que participou no Rockman, na Noruega \u2013 a fazer nascer, em 2020, o Swimrun T\u00e2mega<\/a>, a primeira prova de Swimrun no norte de Portugal. Natural da regi\u00e3o do T\u00e2mega, o organizador juntou o melhor de dois mundos: o Swimrun e a sua terra natal, onde \u00e9 poss\u00edvel descobrir todos os tesouros escondidos, explorar a sua natureza e o patrim\u00f3nio hist\u00f3rico. Todos os atletas participantes ter\u00e3o a oportunidade de passar por praias fluviais, trilhos de montanhas, pela Capela de Rio de Moinhos, pelos antigos moinhos de \u00e1gua e vias romanas. \u201cEste desporto promove o respeito pela natureza\u201d, afirmou. A primeira edi\u00e7\u00e3o s\u00f3 aconteceu em 2021, face \u00e0 situa\u00e7\u00e3o pand\u00e9mica que se vivia no pa\u00eds. No entanto, tudo foi adaptado e organizado, conseguindo ser a primeira corrida em Portugal P\u00f3s-Covid. Contou com a participa\u00e7\u00e3o de 70 atletas, em que todos j\u00e1 estavam familiarizados com o conceito e j\u00e1 tinham participado noutras provas de Swimrun. <\/p>\n

Currently, Swimrun T\u00e2mega features three races with different distances, designed to be accessible to everyone. The \u201csprint format,\u201d with 17 kilometres of running and two kilometres of swimming, is aimed at those discovering the discipline and does not require intensive training. The intermediate level is the \u201cstandard format,\u201d which includes 32 kilometres of running and four kilometres of swimming, requiring some training due to its steeper course. Finally, the \u201cmarathon distance\u201d is intended for high-performance athletes who wish to \u201cscore points on the \u00d6TILL\u00d6 World Series circuit.\u201d This race includes 42 kilometres of running and six kilometres of swimming. <\/p>\n

Swimrun races can take place either in pairs or individually, although individual participation was only authorised a few years ago and initially limited to shorter courses for safety reasons. Today, it is up to the organisers to decide whether individual athletes may compete in longer distances. At Swimrun T\u00e2mega, two thirds of the athletes compete individually and one third in pairs. European averages show different figures, which, according to S\u00e9rgio Moreira, is related to the \u201cdifficulty Portuguese athletes face in finding a partner due to the lack of practitioners.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cSince the conception of Swimrun T\u00e2mega, I have always wanted to include a component focused on youth.\u201d It is worth noting that since the sport was created in 2006, there has never been a serious accident in a Swimrun competition, which demonstrates its safety and accessibility.<\/p>\n

This year, S\u00e9rgio Moreira succeeded in internationalising Swimrun T\u00e2mega by bringing the \u00d6TILL\u00d6 Merit Race label to Portugal for the first time. The winners of the \u201cmarathon distance\u201d qualify directly for the final of the \u00d6TILL\u00d6 Swimrun World Championship. All world championship events take place in the Stockholm archipelago \u2014 \u201cthe exact place where the sport was born.\u201d \u201cIt is a bit like the Mecca of Swimrun, a true pilgrimage for all Swimrun athletes.\u201d <\/p>\n

The race also offers a prize fund of \u20ac5,000, distributed across the three race formats \u2014 Sprint, Standard and Marathon. It is the only race in Portugal to award monetary prizes. Winners competing in the Sprint or Marathon categories receive \u20ac150, while winners in the Standard or Marathon categories competing in pairs receive \u20ac300. Prizes are awarded up to third place. <\/p>\n

A Sport for All Ages<\/strong><\/p>\n

Younger participants are also very much included in this sport, with a strong focus on the inclusion of children and young people from diverse social and economic backgrounds. There are courses adapted to different age groups, starting with the \u201ccanard\u201d category (which means \u201cduckling\u201d in Portuguese), for children aged four to six. At this age, the presence of an adult is allowed to ensure safety, on a course that includes 700 metres of running and ten metres of swimming. The distances increase with age, reaching young athletes aged 16 to 18, who already complete five kilometres of running and 700 metres of swimming. <\/p>\n

\u201cSince the conception of Swimrun T\u00e2mega, I have always wanted to include a youth-focused component,\u201d revealed S\u00e9rgio Moreira. This vision led to the creation of the Swimrun T\u00e2mega Academy, in partnership with the triathlon club Paredes Aventura. It is there that young athletes can learn the discipline through a complete and specialised training programme and develop into high-level competitors. The organiser highlights the example of R\u00faben, a young athlete who started three years ago and now competes in the Sprint category, having already won a silver medal. <\/p>\n

This year, nearly 30 children took part in the Swimrun event for younger participants. Beyond the competition itself, the entire atmosphere is adapted to be festive along the course: giant mascots \u2014 Tameg\u00e3o, Marco and Pena \u2014 are present, and several music-related activities take place. Popcorn, of course, could not be missing. <\/p>\n

As the name suggests, Swimrun combines a passion for swimming with the excitement of running. The races take place in the heart of nature, across magnificent landscapes, following trails that allow for a deep connection with the natural environment.
\nIt is one of the sports disciplines that emerged relatively recently, more precisely in 2006, with the race \u201c\u00d6till\u00d6\u201d, which means \u201cfrom island to island\u201d. This concept originated from a bet between friends, who challenged each other to run between several islands in the Stockholm Archipelago, including sections of open-water swimming.
Today, Swimrun is a global phenomenon, with more than 700 races across various European countries and over 8,000 participants. In Portugal, the first event took place in 2017 \u2014 the \u201cArr\u00e1bida Swimrun\u201d. <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/figure>\n

\u201cMore autonomy, less plastic\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Swimrun T\u00e2mega embraces an eco-friendly approach, promoting the motto \u201cmore autonomy, less plastic.\u201d One of its core values is the protection of nature, with \u201ca long-term vision for cleaning the river and its surroundings,\u201d explains S\u00e9rgio Moreira. During the preparation of the course, the trails are cleaned and cleared, later being reclaimed by hikers. Over the course of three years, \u201cseveral tonnes of waste were removed from the riverbanks.\u201d <\/p>\n

The organisation also works in cooperation with the Portuguese Environment Agency and the managers of the natural reserve to preserve the flora and fauna along the course. The route also passes through private properties that are opened exclusively on race day, avoiding protected reserves while at the same time offering a unique course. <\/p>\n

Plastic cups are prohibited, medals are made of wood, t-shirts are sourced from the local economy, and all signage in the region is biodegradable. In addition, any athlete caught littering along the trail is automatically disqualified. The goal is to minimise the ecological footprint. <\/p>\n

Internationalisation and Innovation<\/strong><\/p>\n

Swimrun T\u00e2mega has been growing internationally and has recently received confirmation that the \u201c\u00d6till\u00d6 Merit Race\u201d label has been renewed. This year, the competition featured the participation of several elite athletes from France, Sweden, Spain, and England. Feedback on the races has also been very positive, contributing to the major goal of making Swimrun T\u00e2mega a global reference in the sport.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are optimistic about a substantial growth in the number of swimrunners next year,\u201d states the organiser.
He also adds that the event may welcome up to 300 participants in 2024, creating an \u201cexciting clash between Portuguese talent and the world elite of Swimrun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Identity Characteristics of the Swimrun T\u00e2mega Event<\/strong><\/p>\n

Participants will have the opportunity to explore the river\u2019s picturesque banks, experiencing an adventure that emphasises sustainability and the preservation of the natural environment. In addition, the race highlights the rich historical heritage of the region, incorporating cultural and historical elements along the course.<\/p>\n

2. Inclusivity
Swimrun T\u00e2mega is designed to be inclusive, offering different distances to suit various fitness levels and age groups. Categories include KIDS for children, Sprint (17 km) for those seeking a shorter challenge, Standard (34 km) for intermediate athletes, and Marathon (42 km) for the most experienced competitors. This approach allows people of all ages and abilities to take part and enjoy the event.<\/p>\n

3. Experience
Swimrun T\u00e2mega promises a unique experience filled with joy, music, and celebration. Participants are encouraged to fully enjoy the course, with entertainment areas set up along the route. Local music and festivities create a lively and energetic atmosphere, where athletes can share moments of happiness and create lasting memories.<\/p>\n

4. Community
Swimrun T\u00e2mega highlights the importance of community and sharing. By encouraging the participation of athletes from all backgrounds, cultures, and ages, it builds a united community around a passion for nature, sport, and adventure. The event also promotes the sharing of experiences and stories among participants, strengthening community bonds and fostering a strong sense of belonging.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/figure>\n

The growing reputation of the event may attract athletes from other disciplines, such as open-water swimming, trail running, and triathlon. The organisation is dedicated to creating courses that suit different skills and interests, with a strong commitment to sporting diversity. Innovation has always been a central element of the event, and 2024 will be no exception. S\u00e9rgio Moreira revealed that on World Children\u2019s Day, 1 June, there will be a major surprise that will \u201cdelight both children and adults.\u201d<\/p>\n

The event\u2019s guiding motto remains present in all its actions:
\u201cSwimrun T\u00e2mega, more than a race, an experience that brings together challenge, self-improvement, and joy, and welcomes all lovers of sport and adventure.\u201d<\/p>\n
